Pico do Areeiro sunrise tours

A guided sunrise tour is the easy way to the "sea of clouds" at Pico do Areeiro — no dark mountain drive, no parking scramble, and a guide who knows where to go if the summit is clouded. Here’s how the options differ, and which actually reach the famous staircase.

Why take a sunrise tour

Pico do Areeiro is a 30–40 minute drive above Funchal on steep, dark, winding roads — and its car parks fill before sunrise. A tour removes both problems: hotel pickup in the small hours, a driver who knows the road, and the flexibility to chase a clear viewpoint if Areeiro itself is fogged. The trade-off is less control over timing and stops.

The key choice is what you want: just the sunrise from the free summit (a jeep or private-car tour), or the staircase itself (a guided hike, with a permit, in daylight). They are different trips — pick accordingly.

Your Options

The sunrise tours, by type

Nine operators, split by what they actually reach. Jeep and private-car tours give you the free summit sunrise; guided hikes walk you to the staircase.

Before You Book

The permit & the catch

Whatever you book, the summit viewpoint is free and needs no permit; the PR1 trail to the staircase needs a paid SIMplifica permit (~€4.50 short / €10.50 full) and, in 2026, opens after sunrise. Full detail is on the access & permit section of the main guide.

Most "sunrise tours" deliver the free summit viewpoint, not the staircase. If a tour promises the staircase at sunrise, ask exactly how it works under the 2026 permit hours — the trail opens after summer sunrise.

FAQ

Pico do Areeiro sunrise tour questions

Pickups are typically around 04:00–05:00 depending on the season, to reach the summit 30–45 minutes before sunrise. Jeep tours run roughly 4 hours in total.

Most don’t — jeep and private-car sunrise tours go to the free summit viewpoint. Only the guided hikes (Madeira Adventure Kingdom, Up Mountain, Madeira Local Guide, Beyond Madeira) reach the actual staircase, as a daytime walk with a permit.

Good guides reroute to alternative sunrise viewpoints (Pico do Facho, Ponta de São Lourenço) if Areeiro is fogged. Check the operator’s weather policy — Adventure Land offers a reschedule-or-refund; most others pivot to backups.

If you dislike dark mountain roads or want to avoid the pre-sunrise parking scramble, yes. If you want full control of timing and to linger, self-drive — just arrive 45–60+ minutes early.
